You might wonder who has any energy left to go shopping. Retailers will find out today.
Despite the trend of consumers holding off and cutting back on purchases this holiday season, retailers are hoping for a huge after-Christmas surge, according to USA Today. They may face more disappointment, according to the newspaper, but that won't stop them from running sales.
Some online sales actually began on Christmas Day, including at Target.com and Kohls.com, and many Walmart and Kohl's stores opened at 5 a.m. today. A Walmart spokeswoman tells USA Today that shoppers who received gift cards like to come out and spend on what they didn't get for Christmas.
The newspaper lists a number of sales running today, including Macy's (buy one, get one free on many men's dress shirts and designer suits,), Sears (up to 40 percent off on appliances over $499 bought with a Sears card) and Kmart (50 cents per gallon gas discounts for "Shop Your Way" members who spend $25 or more on specific Procter & Gamble products).
According to the newspaper, the National Retail Federation expects 2013 holiday sales to be up 3.9 percent this year. But ShopperTrak said weekly in-store retail sales declined 3.5 percent through Dec. 16-22.
