Sears Corporate lays off 100 workers

February 17, 2012

Sears laid off 100 workers at its Chicago-based headquarters Thursday, two months after receiving a huge tax credit for promising to stay in Illinois.

Sears Holding Corp. spokesman Chris Brathwaite told the Northwest Herald that the layoffs took effect immediately but did not violate the terms of a $275 million tax deal for Sears approved by the Illinois Legislature and Gov. Pat Quinn in December.

The deal with the state requires Sears to keep at least 4,250 jobs there; it still has 6,100, Brathwaite said.
