Staples announces more store closures, focus on Web

Office supply chain Staples Inc. announced today that it will close 15 stores in North America, bringing to total number of closures to 30 as the company restructures with more investment in the Web.

According to an article on internetretailer.com, Staples says it will invest to grow its online business, which is the second largest in North America, and to better integrate stores and online. Staples also has plans to restructure its international operations, with plans to close 45 stores and several delivery businesses in Europe by the end of the year.

"By realigning our organization around our customers, we are much better positioned to take advantage of our unique supply chain and retail store assets, while accelerating online growth and significantly improving productivity," said Ron Sargent, Staples CEO.
