While more retailers understand the value in IoT technology, just half know how it will impact operations in the next three years. That, according to a Retail Systems Research, LLC study. The fact illustrates a disconnect between retailers and technology providers, a news release said.

The study, "The Internet of Things: Finally Finding a Home in Retail?" — in its fifth year —benchmarks retailer attitudes about the business value of IoT.

"The true promise of IoT technologies has always been about generating better information," said Steve Rowen, managing partner, RSR, in the release. "In this report, retailers tell us they see IoT providing opportunities for everything from improving customer service all the way through to maintenance and repair procedures. Those who are investing in IoT technologies expect to be rewarded in a big way."

Additional highlights include:

  • Retailers are missing easy opportunities when it comes to IoT and ignoring low-hanging fruit in search of a magic bullet.
  • The study shows 50% of IT professionals have multiple, mature sensor-related projects, compared to 29% of business executives.
