Supermarket woos shoppers with valet parking

August 27, 2009 by James Bickers — Editor, Networld Alliance

There's a fierce battle for customers raging between three Staten Island supermarkets, and that battle just got a little more interesting: ShopRite has started offering free valet parking, according to a report from Staten Island Live.

Although store management won't admit that the addition of the service is related to the heated competition, it comes just shortly after rival Pathmark re-opened in a location less than half a mile up the road.

"Of course it's a competitive market," allowed Mannix. "Our customers are very loyal to ShopRite and the ShopRite brand and prices and value."

Thus far, he said, the valet service has not proved a big, additional draw. But as people learn about the option and as holiday crowds arrive along with brisk, fall weather, he said he expects the customers will catch on.
