Survey: Consumers like BOPIS, mobile browsing, AI

August 5, 2019

A good majority of shoppers who are Amazon Prime members are likely to shop in-store every week, enjoy buying online and picking up in the store, and prefer browsing on mobile devices rather than desktops.

Those are key findings from DMI's What Buyers Want: a DMI Survey that polled more than 1,500 U.S. consumers.

According to the survey nearly half, 44%, of Amazon Prime members are more likely to shop in-store at least weekly, a press release said.

Over half of those polled — 51% — like BOPIS and nearly as many tend to confirm if an item is available in-store before going to the physical store. Nearly half, 42%, would rather browse as a shopper on a mobile device compared to a computer. Additionally, 34% have encountered AI in the purchase journey and more than half of those 34% are happy with the experience.

"These findings demonstrate that frictionless engagement from mobile to online, into the store, and vice versa, is a critical component toward transforming retail businesses. Shoppers are seeking a blended online and in-store experience," said DMI Senior Vice President of Strategy and Chief Digital Officer, Mike Deittrick in the release. "Every retailer has to fully understand their position in the market, assess how they're being disrupted and find the best way to become disruptors."
