Target beats first quarter expectations, fulfillment plays big role in digital growth

May 23, 2019

The first quarter of 2019 has proved to be a boon for Target Corp. as the retailer boasted better than expected comparable sales, robust traffic growth as well as double-digit digital channel sales growth.

Comparable sales increased 4.8% with traffic growth of 4.3% and first quarter comparable sales in the digital channels spiked 42%, a big gain on last year's first quarter 28% increase, according to a press release.

Same day fulfillment, which includes pick up, drive up and Shipt delivery, was a prime driver for over half of that digital sales growth, according to the release.

"Target had an outstanding first quarter as our team delivered a great experience for our guests and drove strong growth in traffic, comparable sales, operating income and earnings per share," said Brian Cornell, chairman and CEO, in the release.
