Target holiday sweater message not a jolly one for some shoppers

Target not pulling sweater off rack despite some negative shopper feedback.

November 12, 2015

Target is getting some retail shopper flak on a holiday sweater’s messaging but the retailer isn't pulling it off the shelves, at least not yet.

The Christmas sweater, which is available in white, red and green, touts this message: OCD Obsessive Christmas Disorder. Some shoppers claim the clothing makes light of a serious mental health disorder and are taking their complaints into the social media realm, tweeting on Twitter and posting on Target’s Facebook page that the garment is mocking those who are battling obsessive compulsive disorder, according to a New York Post report.

"Making light of mental illness continues to enforce the stigma against those who suffer. It is sad to see that Target, a major retailer, has decided to shill this product," user Candy Clymer wrote on the retailer’s Facebook page, according to the Post.

A Target spokesperson told the Post it will continue to sell the sweater despite the negative feedback.

“We never want to disappoint any of our guests and apologize for any discomfort,” Josh Thomas stated in a statement, according to the Post.
