Toys R Us announced plans for next month's release of the company's own children's tablet computer, according to an article on WashingtonPost.com.
The 7-inch touchscreen Tabeo tablet comes preinstalled with 50 apps selected specifically for children, such as the popular Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja games. Google's Android 4.0 operating system will run the WiFi equipped device, priced at $149.99.
The relatively new children's tablet market is already competitive, with other similar tablets like the LeapFrog LeapPad and VTech’s InnoTab, both of which sold strongly last holiday season.
"Toys R Us' Tabeo appears to offer great value, but the challenge with Tabeo will be keeping the product from occupying an awkward middle ground — not quite cool enough to get people to spend the money, but not cheap enough to be an impulse purchase," said Needham & Co. analyst Sean McGowan in the article.
