Walmart will now have digital pricing in its aisles as the mega retailer is switching out paper shelf labels for digital price screens.

A price change that used to take an associate two days to update now takes only minutes, according to a Walmart blog announcing the technology strategy.

Digital pricing touched off a bit of a debate a few months ago when Wendy's made the same move and some critics claimed it would be conducting surge pricing on demand.

Walmart said it will not be changing prices on the hour, according to a Reuters report.

Walmart said the digital approach is a win for customers as well as store associates in a blog.

It has been testing the technology at a Grapevine, Texas store and plans to expand it to 2,300 stores within two years.

It will be a significant shift in how store associates manage customer interaction, pricing, order fulfillment and inventory, "ensuring our customers enjoy an even better shopping experience," stated the blog.

Walmart stores have over 120,000 products on shelves, each with an individual price tag. Store associates had been supporting pricing updates for new items, Rollbacks and markdowns.

The shelf labels were developed by Vusion Group, according to the blog, and price updates at done at the shelf via an app.
