Amazon is shuttering eight Amazon Go stores as part of a store portfolio assessment effort.
Two locations are in its hometown of Seattle, according to a Geekwire report. The stores feature the Just Walk Out technology, a cashierless shopping experience.
The decision is an "optimization" decision according to an Amazon email to the news outlet.
The list of closures includes four stores in San Francisco and two in New York City. All the stores on the list will be open through April 1, according to the news report.
"We remain committed to the Amazon Go format, operate more than 20 Amazon Go stores across the U.S., and will continue to learn which locations and features resonate most with customers as we keep evolving our Amazon Go stores," a spokesperson stated in the email.
The omnichannel retailer opened the first Go store in Seattle five years ago.
