Consumer sentiment in September hit its lowest level in 12 years, according to Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index.
The drop is likely due to consumers being under pressure and higher prices, according to a CNBC report.
"Consumer appraisals of current business conditions became negative for the first time since September 2024," Dana Peterson, the Conference Board's chief economist, told CNBC.
The index data comes on the heels of a consumer survey from the University of Michigan's that revealed sentiment fell 7% in September which it stated was its second-lowest reading on record.
