Costco is using membership scanning devices at entrances that require members to scan their card by placing the barcode or QR code against the screen, according to a Costco help statement.

Members without a photo on their membership card must show other photo ID.

The scanning strategy, according to news reports, is aimed at stemming non-members from using Costco services and also speeding up the checkout process.

The machines are expected to roll out to all locations in the coming months and are already in play in California, according to a Daily Mail report.

The news comes just months after Costco began cracking down on membership card requirement for those buying food from its outdoor food courts.

The requirement, going into effect as of April 8, won't impact indoor food courts as they are only accessible to club members, according to an Axios report.
