Kohl's has announced it will close 27 of its 1,150-plus store location by April.

"We always take these decisions very seriously," Tom Kingsbury, Kohl's chief executive officer, said in a press release. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

The news comes on the heels of Macy's also closing stores within the same time frame, according to a USA Today report.

In some instances, both stores are closing locations in the same area, such as San Diego and Sacramento in California where a store of each brand will close.

The closures by the two retailers involve 93 locations combined.

"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy's Inc., said in a press release.
