Report: Mobile device use in shopping grabs deep traction, BOPIS gets more popular

March 1, 2019

Shoppers are increasingly relying on mobile devices with 86.2 percent using smartphones to research products while in a brick-and-mortar store and 83.8 percent want store associates to be using handheld mobile devices for customer service, according to iVend Retail's 2019 Global Shopping Trends: Essential Insights for Retailers.

The survey also revealed quick and easy checkout as the most important part of the shopping experience and that 44.4 percent are motivated to shop with a retailer offering self-checkout. The buy-online, pick-up in store saw an increase in usage of 30 percent compared to 2018 and the main reasons for BOPIS use are saving on shipping and saving time.

"This is the fourth year we've conducted our global research and the 2019 report uncovered some important shifts in consumer attitudes towards technology," said Kamal Karmakar, CEO of CitiXsys, in the release. "We are focusing our resources and research for iVend Retail on areas that are most important to shoppers, like mobility, faster checkouts and loyalty programs. Retailers should follow suit and invest in future-ready technology to connect with their shoppers in the digital age."
