Retailers closed on Thanksgiving: Popular store brands pepper a long list

The list of retailers closed on Thanksgiving now tops out at 76, with some big brand names on the list.

The Thanksgiving Day store closings list, published by BestBlackFriday.com, had about 60 retailers on it in the first week of the month.

Ikea, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Lowe's and Costco are on the list.

As Retail Customer Experience reported, one reason for the longer list may be the fact more consumers don't want retail stores to be open on the holiday. An online New Saint Leo University poll, of 1,167 adults from Oct. 11 through Oct. 17, 2018, reveals close to half of U.S. consumers want retailers to close on the holiday.

Another reason for the increasing number of closures is the fact that shoppers are shopping well before Thanksgiving and Black Friday this year. In fact half expect to do that shopping before the big Black Friday events, according to Brand Keys' annual survey of 11,625 consumers.The survey noted that pre-Black Friday shopping is now the "new normal" for the holidays and, in response, retailers have acknowledged the shift by launching earlier and earlier "Black Friday-like" sales.
