Shocker: Some consumers prefer shopping to sex

A survey reveals 14 percent of American consumers would rather shop than have sex.

March 16, 2016

A new Ebates Spring Shopping survey reveals 14 percent of consumers are more into shopping than sex and one reason is that shopping makes them feel good.

In fact, nearly 100 percent of those polled, adults and teens, view shopping as a rewarding therapy to boost their moods with clothing as the top want.

The report states 96 percent of American adults and 95 percent of teens admit to participating in retail therapy. Other top purchases include entertainment and travel for adults, and electronics and entertainment for teens.

The national survey also reports 62 percent of adults view cash-back shopping as most rewarding while 63 percent of teens report highest satisfaction when shopping for themselves.

When it comes to brand education 70 percent of adults and 61 percent of teens state television is the primary outlet for learning about new brands. The number isn't as rosy when it comes to brand insight via social media as nearly half of adults (43 percent) and 26 percent of teens say they don't discover brands through social media.

Shopping apparently is very rewarding with 85 percent of adults and 86 percent teens stating the activity makes them feel better and it even beats eating pizza, working out or having a sweet treat for more than a third of those polled.

"Our survey confirms that Americans enjoy shopping and buying things makes them happy," said Ebates.com CEO Kevin H. Johnson, in an announcement. "When it comes to retail therapy and online shopping, happiness is just a click away."

Shopping is also a big boredom cure for 66 percent of adults and 75 percent of teens. Nearly 75 percent of adults shop online when seeking a specific item.
