Target to test new restock strategy, next-day delivery in Minneapolis

May 16, 2017

In a quest to get orders into the hands of customers faster than ever, Target is prepping a new delivery and restocking approach that it hopes to pilot in Minneapolis stores.

Right now the retailer is testing the effort, called Target Restock, at headquarters, according to a company press release. It aims to make ordering online more rewarding given it will provide next-day delivery.

"We created Target Restock to save busy guests time, and make it easier than ever to get household essentials delivered quickly. This is another example of how Target is connecting stores and digital to create new services for guests," according to the release.

Once it goes live this summer Minneapolis area customers who have a REDcard can gain access to a dedicated online experience featuring thousands of household items. For a "low, flat fee" those items can be delivered by 1:30 p.m the next day, though the release does not indicate the actual fee. The items will be plucked off shelves at local stores.

"We’re busy fine-tuning the experience and testing various enhancements — so stay tuned for more information once the pilot launches this summer," states the release.

According to a TechCrunch report, the goal is enhancing the personal shopping experience.

"Focusing on REDcard guests also allows us to build a more personalized experience for guests who take part in the pilot," a Target spokesperson told TechCrunch. "Guests will have the option to pay with REDcard — and receive the 5 percent discount — or use another card of their choice."
