Trump tweet: Amazon making US Postal Service dumber and poorer

President Donald J. Trump in a tweet Friday claimed mega etailer Amazon is getting richer and the United States Postal Service is getting dumber and poorer, given the low delivery fees USPS is charging the online retailer.

The tweet reads: "Why is the United States Post Office, which is losing many billions of dollars a year, while charging Amazon and others so little to deliver their packages, making Amazon richer and the Post Office dumber and poorer? Should be charging MUCH MORE!"

It isn't the first time Trump has lashed out regarding Amazon and its CEO Jeff Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post. In August, Trump tweeted Amazon was "doing great damage to tax paying retailers," leading to job losses, reported the New York Post.

This latest tweet, however, could be viewed more as a back-handed compliment compared to tweets regarding Bezos and the Washington Post's coverage of Trump's election and his presidency. As one Twitter user noted in his response to Trump's Friday tweet: "Jealous much? Jeff Bezos better at business?"

According to a New York Post report, USPS has lost money for 11 consecutive years despite the fact that online shopping and related postal delivery of packages have increased every year. The postal service handled 40 percent of Amazon's product delivery last year, according to the Post, which quoted Bernstein Research analyst David Vernon. Vernon estimated Amazon pays $2 a package when sending via the post office, which is about half the cost of using UPS or FedEx, according to the report.
