In a quest to speed up delivery of online bought goods, Walmart aims to develop automated mini-warehouses in and near its stores.

It plans to build 20,000-square-foot and 30,000-square-foot fulfilment centers next to store locations or within store buildings, according to a CNBC report.

The centers will be staffed by robots to speed the supply chain process by delivering items to areas where workers can assemble for pickup or delivery.

The news comes as consumers are increasingly relying on online shopping as well as curbside pickup and delivery due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The retailer is not alone in undertaking new approaches as Stop & Shop and fellow grocer Albertsons are also exploring automated and robotic approaches, according to CNBC.
