Walmart is refunding customers impacted by inaccurate self-checkout transactions, according to a report by The U.S. Sun that cited a Bloomberg report.
The retailer has taken accountability for a technical fault that affected approximately 1,600 Walmart stores earlier this year that led to overcharging self-checkout users.
Thousands of products were affected. Some items rang up lower than their shelf price and others rang up higher. "We've made it a priority to refund customers who were overcharged, and we did not take action on the undercharges with our customers," a Walmart spokesperson told the news outlet.
This self-checkout issue follows Walmart's recently settled class action lawsuit that claimed shoppers were overcharged for weighted groceries. Walmart has denied wrongdoing but settled the lawsuit with a $45 million payment pot for shoppers. Affected customers could receive up to $500, but must file a claim before June 5.
The news comes on the heels of Walmart closing self-checkout lanes at a store in West Hills, Los Angeles amid wider concerns about retail theft in self-checkout lanes
