Amazon is pulling out its Just Walk Out cashierless technology in Amazon Fresh stores being revamped and will not be deploying the technology in new stores.
Instead, the omnichannel retailer and grocer will be deploying Dash Carts, according to a report at The Information. The carts allow customers to scan items as they shop.
Amazon deployed the shop-and-go technology in one of its Amazon Fresh grocery locations in June, 2021 after deploying it in its Amazon Go stores years earlier. It deployed it to Whole Foods Market stores, which it owns, in 2022.
Just Walk Out is a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning technologies.
There are more than 130 third-party Just Walk Out technology locations in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Canada, with new locations launching every month, including at travel retailers, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, conference centers, theme parks, convenience stores, hospitals, and college campuses, according to an Amazon spokesperson.
