Mother's Day should prove lucrative for clothing retailers, eateries

April 25, 2016

A new study reveals clothing will be a popular choice for Mother's Day shoppers, as well as a special meal, and spending is expected to be up six percent this year.

The Brand Keys' Mother’s Day survey predicts 88 percent of consumers will celebrate the holiday, spending an average of $205. Male shoppers are expected to spend more than females, with an average spend of $228, compared to women's $182, according to an announcement.

Brunch, lunch and dinner options rank tops among 90 percent of consumers, and nearly 100 percent of consumers will be buying cards.

"Once again, tradition has trumped tech," said Robert Passikoff, president of Brand Keys, in a release. "Cards, meals, and flowers have become 'rice-of-entry' for the holiday. But when it came to more substantial gifts, clothing showed the greatest change from last year. up 10 percent."

The survey reveals jewelry is expected to be a more popular gift item this year, up 7 percent this year.

"Preferences for shopping venues reflect this year' preference for more traditional gifts," said Passikoff, "And remained generally unchanged from last year, with the exception of department stores, which were down six percent." Catalogues were down again this year by another four percent. Discount and specialty stores were at the top of consumers' list of places to shop for Mom, "because consumers regard them as ideal venues for apparel and jewelry," said Passikoff.
