More consumers are jumping online to buy groceries these day, with a 29 percent increase in total online grocery shopping in the past year and 19 percent of consumers doing all their weekly food shopping via the Internet.

A 72 Point Inc. survey, on behalf of online organic grocer Door to Door Organics, reveals that the majority of food-buying consumers still prefer a mix of online and brick-and-mortar shopping experiences, according to a Supermarket News report.

Of those polled, 13 percent said that one single food retail establishment meets their needs for weekly grocery purchases, and 34 percent use two or more for weekly food shopping. Over half, 53 percent, said they shop at three or more stores online and offline each week.

When online shopping for food, 23 percent are not buying fresh grocery items; of those who have and do purchase produce online, more than half, 57 percent, report that the experience was disappointing given a lack of quality and freshness.

The online produce purchase experience would be better if consumers were given information about when the produce was picked or packaged, reported 58 percent of those polled. Over half, 51 percent, would like to have local farm produce available online.
