NFC mobile phone payments come to Latin America

November 4, 2008

PARIS — Silicon Valley-based ViVOtech announced that its provisioning software for Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile payments is being used in the first NFC mobile payment trial in Latin America, led by Visa Inc. in Guatemala. This deployment marks Latin America's first NFC-based mobile payment pilot and use of Visa payWave-enabled mobile handsets at hundreds of merchants that have installed the ViVOpay 5000 contactless payment readers in Guatemala.

ViVOtech's readers and NFC provisioning software were deployed in the mobile Visa payWave pilot launched by Visa Inc., in partnership with CompaAia de Procesamiento de Medios de Pago de Guatemala (known as Visanet Guatemala), Banco Industrial, and Banco Uno and is expected to last 6 months. Mobile payments will be available to more than 200 Visa card holders whose credit card data will be migrated onto the cell phone, allowing them to use the Visa payWave feature.
