A Consumer Reports survey conducted in October found that among people who received a gift card during the 2006 holiday season, 27 percent of them left one or more unused — up from 19 percent in the previous year. Chief among the reasons for leaving the gift fund on the virtual table: not enough time to shop, and not able to find anything they wanted.
In related news, the National Retail Federation reports that a whopping 92 percent of top retailers don't have dormancy fees or expiration dates on their gift card programs.
